Important information
- Unlicensed use
- Reserved for use in the Emergency Dept in the management of acute migraine
- Doses in this monograph are expressed as the salt. (The doses have been rounded to closest reasonable dose that can be administered)
- Many references quote doses as base. Take care when interpreting reference sources
- Patient must lie down during and for 30 minutes after administration to reduce the risk of hypotension (ref 1)

Stemetil (Prochloperazine Mesilate) 12.5mg per ml ampoule

Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Methods of intravenous administration
Slow intravenous injection
- Give slowly at a maximum rate of 6.25mg /minute (ref 1)
- Dilute 1ml to 5ml with Sodium chloride 0.9% to aid slow administration (ref 1)
Dose in adults
- Typical dose: 6.25 to 12.5mg (ref 2)
- Do not give more than 12.5mg as a single dose (ref 1)
Monitoring
Blood pressure and heart rate for at least 30 minutes post injection (ref 1)
Further information
- Ensure suitable antidote, e.g. benztropine or procyclidine (if available), readily available in the event of a dystonic reaction
